On an item’s edit screen, tap the picture square beside the name, then choose Photo Library, Camera (Enable Camera Access until you’ve allowed it) or Paste From Clipboard — or, once the item has a name, Search for Images to find one online. On devices with Apple Intelligence you can also Create with Image Playground.

Search for Images looks for the item’s brand, name and size. Change the words at the top and search again if you like, then tap a picture to use it. Remove Background is on to begin with, so the picture comes without its background; turn it off to keep the background.

Once there’s a photo, the same menu offers Remove Background (or Restore Background) and Remove Photo. On the item’s screen, Add Photo takes you there.

On a recipe showing its ingredients as List with Images or Grid, you can also touch and hold an ingredient and choose Search for Images to give that pantry item a picture.

Pantry item photos are a Premium feature. Without Premium, the picture square offers Upgrade to Premium.
