A summary is a few lines about the dish. It shows on the recipe’s photo, below its details.

To write your own, edit the recipe and tap Summary. Recipes saved from a website often bring one with them.

When a recipe has no summary, Apple Intelligence writes one from its name, ingredients, directions and notes, on iPhones and iPads that have it (iOS 26 or later). It runs on your device, and the Apple Intelligence symbol shows while it writes.

The summary is kept, so it’s there straight away next time. It’s written again when you change the recipe’s name, ingredients, directions or notes, or the Summary Style. To use other words, write your own under Summary.

In Settings → Apple Intelligence, Recipe Summaries turns this off or on, and Summary Style chooses Standard, Minimalist, Verbose or Custom. With Custom, describe the tone you’d like, or even another language.

With Premium + Sync, a summary goes to your other devices and your household with the recipe, so an iPhone or iPad without Apple Intelligence shows it too.

Printing a recipe on a full page and Copy Recipe as Text include its summary, whoever wrote it.
